One Hundred Bible Facts on the Sabbath Question

 

Why should we keep the Sabbath day? What is the object of the Sabbath? Who made it? When was it made and for whom? Which day is the true Sabbath? Many keep Sunday, the first day of the week. What Bible authority do they have for that? Here are the facts about both days, as plainly stated in the Word of God:

 

Sixty Bible Facts About the Seventh Day:

 

  1. After God worked the first six days of creation, He rested on the seventh day. Genesis 2:1-3. "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."
  2. God made the seventh day His Sabbath or rest day. Sabbath day means rest day. To illustrate: When a person is born on a certain day, that day becomes their birthday. So when God rested upon the seventh day, that day became his rest, or Sabbath day.
  3. We cannot change the day God made the Sabbath. You cannot change your birthday from the day you were born to some other day. Neither can you change God’s rest day to a day on which He did not rest. Hence the seventh day is still God’s Sabbath day.
  4. The Creator blessed the seventh day. Genesis 2:3. "3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."
  5. He sanctified the seventh day. Exodus 20:11. "11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
  6. God made the Sabbath day in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 2:1-3. "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."
  7. God created the Sabbath before the fall; therefore it is not a type. There were no types till after Adam and Eve sinned.
  8. Jesus says He made the Sabbath for man. Mark 2:27. "27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath." This means for the human race. The word ‘man’ here is unlimited. It means the Gentiles as well as the Jews.
  9. Therefore the Sabbath is for all nations. Acts 17:26. "26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation."
  10. The Sabbath is a memorial of creation. Exodus 20:11 "11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." Exodus 31:17 "17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed." Every time we rest upon the seventh day we honor God and His creation.
  11. The Sabbath is Holy because God rested on the seventh day. Genesis 2:1-3.  "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."
  12. It is not for Jews only; it came into being 2,300 years before there was a Jew.
  13. The Bible never called it the Jewish Sabbath. It is “the Sabbath of the Lord your God.” We should be careful how they stigmatize God’s holy rest day.
  14. The Bible speaks of the Sabbath all through the patriarchal age. Genesis 2:1-3.  "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."
  15. It was a part of God’s commandments before Sinai. When God gave manna to Israel, they were not to gather it on the Sabbath. This occurred before Sinai. Exodus 16:4, 27, 29. "4 Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. 27 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. 29 See, for that the Lord hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day."
  16. Then God placed it in the heart of His moral law. God put the Sabbath into His Law because He intended for us to keep it. Exodus 20:1-17. "And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. 13 Thou shalt not kill. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15 Thou shalt not steal. 16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's."  
  17. The living God commands the seventh-day Sabbath in the Ten Commandments. Deuteronomy 4:12-13. "12 And the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice. 13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone." 
  18. God wrote the Commandment with His own finger. Exodus 31:18. "18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God."
  19. He engraved it in stone, showing its imperishable nature. Deuteronomy 5:22. "22 These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me."
  20. God told Moses to keep the tables of stone in the Ark of the Covenant. Deuteronomy 10:1-5. "1 At that time the Lord said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood. 2 And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the ark. 3 And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand. 4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the Lord spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the Lord gave them unto me. 5 And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the Lord commanded me."
  21. We are not to add or take away from the Bible. Some people have taken away the Sabbath and added Sunday in its place. Revelation 22:18-19. "18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."
  22. God destroyed the Israelites in the wilderness because they profaned the Sabbath. Ezekiel 20:12-13. "12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them. 13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them."
  23. It is the sign of the true God, so we can know Him. Ezekiel 20:20. "20 And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God." 
  24. God promised that Jerusalem would stand forever if the Jews would keep the Sabbath. Jeremiah 17:24-25. "24 And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the Lord, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein; 25 Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall remain forever."
  25. God allowed Israel to become slaves in Babylon because they broke the Sabbath. Nehemiah 13:18. "18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath."
  26. God allowed the destruction of Jerusalem because of Sabbath breaking. Jeremiah 17:27. "27 But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched." 
  27. God has pronounced a special blessing on all the Gentiles who keep it. Isaiah 56:6-7. "6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the Lord, to serve him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; 7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine alter; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people."
  28. This prophecy, (Isaiah 56:1-12), refers wholly to the Christian dispensation. "Thus saith the Lord, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. 2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. 3 Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the Lord, speak, saying, The Lord hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. 4. For thus saith the Lord unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant; 5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. 6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the Lord, to serve him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; 7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. 8 The Lord God which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him. 9 All ye beasts of the field, come to devour, yea, all ye beasts in the forest. 10 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. 11 Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. 12 Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant." 
  29. God has promised to bless anyone who will keep the Sabbath. Isaiah 56:2. "2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of the man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil."
  30. The Lord asks us to call it a delight and honorable. Isaiah 58:13.  We must not call it the “old Jewish Sabbath,” or “a yoke of bondage,” etc. "13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:" 
  31. After the holy Sabbath has been trodden down “many generations,” God’s people will restore it in the last days. Isaiah 58:12-13. "12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. 13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words." 
  32. All the holy prophets kept the seventh day.
  33. Jesus kept the seventh-day Sabbath. Luke 4:16 "16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read." and John 15:10. "10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love." 
  34. The seventh day is the Lord’s day. See Revelation 1:10 "10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,"  also Mark 2:28 "28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath." And Isaiah 58:13 "13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:" and finally Exodus 20:10. "10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:"
  35. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. Mark 2:28. "28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath."
  36. Jesus tells us the Sabbath is designed for man’s good. Mark 2:23-28. "23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. 24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? 25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? 26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? 27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath." 
  37. Instead of abolishing the Sabbath, He carefully taught us how to observe it. Matthew 12:1-13. "At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. 3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; 4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? 6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. 7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. 9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: 10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. 11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. 13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other."
  38. He taught His disciples that they should do only lawful deeds on the Sabbath day. Matthew 12:12. "12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days."
  39. He instructed His apostles that they were to keep the Sabbath in a time 40 years after His resurrection. Matthew 24:20. "20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:"
  40. The women who stood by the cross carefully kept the seventh day after His death. Luke 23:56. "56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment."
  41. Thirty years after Christ’s resurrection, the Bible expressly calls it “the Sabbath day.” Acts 13:14. "14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down."
  42. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, called it “the Sabbath day” in 45 A.D. Acts 13:27. "27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him." Was Paul wrong in keeping the Sabbath? Or shall we believe modern teachers who say that it ceased to be the Sabbath at the resurrection of Christ?
  43. Luke, the inspired Christian historian, writing as late as 62 A.D., calls it “the Sabbath day.” Acts 13:44. "44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God."
  44. The Gentile converts called it the Sabbath. Acts 13:42. "42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath."
  45. In the Christian council, (52 A.D.), in the presence of the apostles and thousands of disciples, James called it the “Sabbath day.” Acts 15:21. "21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day." 
  46. It was usual to hold prayer meetings on the Sabbath. Acts 16:13. "13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither." 
  47. Paul read the Scriptures in public meetings on the Sabbath. Acts 17:2-3. "2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, 3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ." 
  48. It was Paul’s custom to preach on the Sabbath. Acts 17:2. "2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures."
  49. The book of Acts alone gives a record of his holding eighty-four Sabbath meetings. See Acts 13:14, 44 "14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. 44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God." Acts 16:13 "13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither." Acts 17:2 "2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures." And Acts 18:4, 11 "4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. 11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them."
  50. There was never any dispute between the Christians and the Jews about the Sabbath day. This is proof that the Christians still observed the same day that the Jews did.
  51. The Jews often accused Paul; however, they never charged him with not keeping the Sabbath day. Why not? Because he kept each Sabbath.
  52. Paul himself expressly declared that he had kept the law. “While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.” Acts 25:8. How could this be true if he had not kept the Sabbath?
  53. The New Testament mentions the Sabbath 59 times. Always with respect, bearing the same title it had in the Old Testament, “The Sabbath Day.”
  54. There is not a word anywhere in the New Testament about abolishing the Sabbath; doing away with the Sabbath; changing the Sabbath, or anything of the kind.
  55. God has never given permission to any man to work upon it. By what authority does anyone today use the seventh day for common labor? Also, the New Testament does not record one single time when a Christian did ordinary work on the Sabbath.
  56. There is no record that God has ever removed His blessing or sanctification from the seventh day.
  57. Adam and Eve kept the Sabbath with God in Eden before the fall. We will keep the Sabbath eternally in the new earth after the restitution. Isaiah 66:22-23. "22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. 23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord."
  58. The seventh-day Sabbath was an important part of the Law of God. It came from His own mouth, and was written by His own finger upon stone at Sinai. See Exodus 20:1-26. "1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3. And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou has polluted it. 26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon." When Jesus began His work, He expressly declared that He had not come to destroy the law. Matthew 5:17. “17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets…”
  59. After God wrote the Ten Commandment law, He added no more. Deuteronomy 5:22. "22 These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me." 
  60. Jesus severely condemned the Pharisees as hypocrites for pretending to love God, while they made void one of the Ten Commandments by their tradition. The keeping of Sunday is only a tradition of men.

  1. The very first work recorded in the Bible is work done on Sunday, the first day of the week. Genesis 1:1-5. This was done by the Creator Himself. If God made the earth on Sunday, can it be wicked for us to work on Sunday? "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day."
  2. God commands men to work upon the first day of the week. Exodus 20:8-11. Is it wrong to obey God? "8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
  3. None of the patriarchs ever kept Sunday.
  4. None of the holy prophets ever kept Sunday.
  5. By the express command of God, His holy people used the first day of the week as a common working day for at least 4,000 years.
  6. God Himself calls the first day of the week a working day. Ezekiel 46:1. "Thus saith the Lord God; The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened."
  7. God did not rest on Sunday.
  8. He never blessed Sunday.
  9. Christ did not rest on Sunday.
  10. Jesus was a carpenter (Mark 6:3), and worked at his trade until He was 30 years old. He kept the Sabbath and worked six days in the week, as all admit. Therefore He did many a hard day’s work on Sunday. "3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judah, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him."
  11. The apostles worked on the first day of the week as Jesus did.
  12. The apostles never rested on Sunday.
  13. Christ never blessed Sunday.
  14. No divine authority has ever blessed Sunday.
  15. God has never sanctified the first day of the week.
  16. There is no law to enforce the keeping of Sunday, so it is not a sin to work on it. Romans 4:15. "15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression." And I John 3:4. "4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." 
  17. The New Testament does not forbid work to be done on it.
  18. There is no penalty for its violation.
  19. There is no blessing promised for its observance.
  20. There are no regulations on keeping it. Would this be so if the Lord wished us to keep it?
  21. Never is it called the Christian Sabbath.
  22. Never is it called the Sabbath day at all.
  23. Never is it called the Lord’s day.
  24. Never is it called even a rest day.
  25. Sunday has no sacred title in the Bible. Why should we call it holy?
  26. The Bible refers to Sunday as the “first day of the week.”
  27. Jesus never mentioned it in any way, never took its name upon His lips, so far as the record shows.
  28. The word Sunday never occurs in the Bible at all.
  29. Neither God, Christ, or inspired men, ever said one word about Sunday being a holy day.
  30. There are only eight references to the first day of the week in all the New Testament. Matthew 28:1. "1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre."
    Mark 16:2, 9; "2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. 9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils." Luke 24:1; "1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them." John 20:1, 19; "The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. 19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you." Acts 20:7; "7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight."
     I Corinthians 16:2. "2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come."     None of these texts make Sunday holy.
  31. Six of these texts refer to the same day.
  32. Paul directed the saints to look over their secular affairs on that day. I Corinthians 16:2. "2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come." 
  33. In all the New Testament, we have a record of only one religious meeting held upon that day, and even this was a night meeting. Acts 20:5-12. (The New English Bible expressly says “on Saturday night.”) "5 These going before tarried for us at Troas. 6 And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days. 7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. 8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. 9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. 10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. 11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed. 12 And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted."
  34. There is no intimation that anyone ever held a meeting upon it before or after that.
  35. It was not their custom to meet on that day.
  36. There was no requirement to break bread on that day.
  37. We have an account of only one instance in which it was done. Acts 20:7. "7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight." 
  38. That was done in the night- after midnight. Acts 20:7-11. "7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. 8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. 9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. 10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. 11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till the break of day, so he departed." Jesus celebrated it on Thursday evening, (Luke 22:1-71) "1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. 2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. 3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. 4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. 5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. 6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude. 7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. 9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? 10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. 11 And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. 13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. 14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. 21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! 23 And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. 24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. 28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. 29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; 30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. 33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. 35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. 70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth." And the disciples sometimes did it every day. Acts 2:42-46. "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart..."   
  39. The Bible nowhere says that the first day of the week commemorates the resurrection of Christ. This is a tradition of men, which makes void the law of God. Matthew 15:1-9. "Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, 2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. 3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. 5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; 6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. 7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."
  40. Finally, the New Testament is silent about any change of the Sabbath day or any sacredness for the first day.

Here are 100 plain Bible facts upon this question. They show conclusively that the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord in both the Old and New Testament.

 

Sunday comes from pagan sun worship, and came into the Christian Church about 321 A.D.  It is a tradition and commandment of men. Jesus says in Matthew 15:9 “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” Hebrews 5:9 "9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him." It's clear that Christ is the Eternal Salvation for everyone who obeys Him. And Revelation 22:14 "Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city." calls us blessed when we do His Commandments.

 

Some Christians say, I am a born-again Christian and that is all that matters. That may well be true, but what is the evidence that a person is a born-again Christian? A willing obedience to Christ. In Luke 6:46 Jesus says: “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” Others say, I love Jesus and if I love Him then everything will be alright. In John 14:15 Jesus says: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Some say, Yes, but the Ten Commandments aren’t Jesus’ commands. James 4:12 says: “There is one lawgiver, who is able to save….” The Bible clearly teaches there is only one who can save. That one is Jesus. Therefore, if there is only one lawgiver and He is the Savior, then the lawgiver is Jesus; so the Ten Commandments are the Commandments of Jesus given in His pre-existent form on Mount Sinai.
